Simson Maxwell provided successful Propane Diesel Bi-Fuel System 11.05.2011

The cooperation between Simson Maxwell, Volvo Penta and ComAp results in a safe, cost saving, state of the art, environmentally friendly power solution to the Emerald Lake Lodge a remote resort in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Being isolated and far from utility power, they rely on their generator set as their life line.

"After more than two years of researching bi-fuel systems for our client, the ComAp Bi-Fuel system proved to be the most economical solution for easy adaptability. Offering maximum fuel supplementation throughout a greater range of load requirements," states Simson Maxwell's Oil & Gas Business Development Manager, Andrew Keats.

This 300 kilowatt Simmax generator set equipped with the fully automated propane / diesel bi-fuel option utilizes 53% propane and 47% diesel.

We are delighted with the substitution results of this project” says Santokh Sahota, Engineering Manager with Simson Maxwell.

With this substitution rate, it proves to be a source of substantial fuel cost savings for the lodge. State of the art electronics maximize the amount of injected gas, while keeping all of the Volvo engine parameters within the defined safe operating limits as specified by the Volvo Penta. The system’s number one focus is always the safety of the Volvo engine.

The Bi-fuel solution was manufactured and supplied by ComAp subsidiary and exclusive Bi-fuel distributor for North America ComAp LLC .

Some of the benefits of a bi-fuel system include:

  • Substantial fuel savings
  • Up to 70% - 80% fuel substitution rate with Natural Gas
  • Up to 50% - 60% fuel substitution rate with Propane
  • Very short investment payback period
  • No major equipment modifications necessary
  • No derating of system power output
  • Fuel flexibility: possibility of bi-fuel or all-diesel operation
  • Smaller on-site fuel storage quantities
  • Reduced diesel fuel conditioning costs
  • More environmentally friendly emissions profile
  • Longer engine life
  • Longer service intervals
